In the human body, the pancreas usually produces enzymes that break down foods into nutrients that the body can use for energy and other functions.Frequently, papain is included in prescription as digestive enzymes to replace what individuals with conditions who cannot produce enzymes naturally. |
Process of obtaining Papain : The latex is obtained by making incisions on the surface of the green fruits early in the morning and repeating every 4 or 5 days until the latex ceases to flow. The tool is of bone, glass, sharp-edged bamboo or stainless steel knife or raxor blade. Tappers hold a coconut shell, clay cup, or glass, porcelain or enamel pan beneath the fruit to catch the latex. The latex coagulates quickly.For best results,it is spread on fabric and oven-dried at a low temperature, then ground to powder to obtain Papain.

PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING OF PAPAIN FROM LATEX :
Papain (IP) - Papaya latex is mixed with potassium metabisulphate, sieved to remove extraneous materials and then blended with activated zeocarb cation exchange resin. The mixture is then centrifuged to separate out the resin from the liquefied latex. The latex is again mixed with activated anion exchange resin, blended and centrifuged. The liquefied latex is spread in trays and dried in vacuum shelf drier, and mixed with potassium metabi sulphate, ground and diluted with lactose to get IP grade papain.
Papain Concentrate - Papaya latex is mixed with potassium metabisulphate and distilled / demineralised water, stirred thoroughly and stored in cold room for settling. The supernatant liquid is siphoned off, filtered and the clear filtrate is mixed with denatured spirit and allowed to settle in cold room. The supernatant liquid is decanted from the slurry, and the slurry is filtered. The filtered cake washed with rectified spirit and dried first with compressed air and then in vacuum self dryer. The dried material is mixed with potassium metabisulphite, ground to desired particle size and diluted with lactose.

Papain Enzyme : Carica is a genus of about 20 species of evergreen trees native to tropical America. They all produce a acrid milky sap. The latex of the papaya plant and its green fruits contains two proteolytic enzymes, papain and chymopapain. The latter is most abundant but papain is twice as potent. Fruit and seed extracts have pronounced bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherischia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Shigella flexneri.
Recently, the FDA has cleared chymopapain for intradiscal injection in patients with documented herniated lumbar intervertebral discs whose signs and symptoms have not responded to conservative therapy over an adequate period of time.
